VETS-4212: the annual veteran employment report

Many federal contractors must file a VETS-4212 report with the Department of Labor every year between August 1 and September 30. Here's who files and how.

Federal contractors covered by the veterans' employment rules must file a VETS-4212 report with the Department of Labor every year between August 1 and September 30. DOL doesn't grant extensions (DOL VETS-4212).

This isn't a veteran-owned business rule. It applies to contractors of any ownership, but many SDVOSBs cross the threshold as they grow.

Who has to file

Contractors and subcontractors holding a covered federal contract. DOL's VETS-4212 page puts the contract threshold at $200,000. The FAR used $150,000 for many years, so if your contracts fall between those amounts, confirm with DOL.

What the report covers

The report counts your employees and new hires who are protected veterans, for the 12-month period you choose. It doesn't ask for names.

How to file

  1. Choose a 12-month reporting period that ends between July 1 and August 31 of the filing year.
  2. Count total employees and new hires, and how many of each are protected veterans.
  3. File online through DOL's VETS-4212 portal between August 1 and September 30.
  4. Keep the confirmation.
